Would people be as comfortable buying meat if the date the animal was KILLED was displayed alongside the ‘best before’ date? Consumers should remember that meat is the dead flesh from a once living breathing sentient animal who didn’t want to die.

actually i would feel more comfortable. it would make choosing fresher meat easier. thats a very good idea.

The text I just sent to a friend who I’ve known since I was literally too young to remember reads “I feel you, bro. Work doesn’t post schedules until Thursday. It’s a real pain in the buns. Yo, even if they’re a scumbag dog and I can’t make it down to DCL this weekend, you and I need to powwow soon, yeah?”

I’m pretty sure that even those of you who have talked to me enough to get to know my usual patterns of speech would be lost if you listened to the two of us talking.

“I made the chocolate noodles by boiling 3/4 of a cup of water and then mixing in two grams of agar powder. I then melted one and a half cups of Hershey’s chocolate and mixed it in with the agar solution along with 1/3 of a cup of chocolate milk to keep it from getting too thick. It’s 88 degrees in Baltimore County, and my deer bones are happily degreasing!

When I started in on this process, I was lucky if the day hit anything over 55. It was several days before the water looked murky enough to change. Slow as hell.

But now look at it! I’ve never had the water that color! I suppose it may be due in part to the peroxide I added to this bath, in an attempt to cut down on the smell from the macerating cartilage on the end of the femur I’ve got in there. The peroxide seemed to bleach some of the color out of the Dawn, after I added it—the solution went from dark blue to almost clear. But when I was fishing around in there this morning to see if the bones were still soapy, I was pleased to find that they were. Looks like the peroxide just took out the dye, without really reacting with the soap itself.

But it’s also working on the bones too! I’ve noticed some of the darkest spots are looking lighter just after a couple days. The cartilage has gone from being near-black to this odd kind of pale purple-gray. There’s still a bit of stink, though.

What’s really got me impressed is the color of the water. It was kind of a clear color, with faint hints of blue this morning and now—at quarter to four in the afternoon—there’s a lot of murk, and some definite brown to the color. It actually looks like the degreasing water from things I’ve seen online, done by people who use aquarium heaters to speed the process. I guess the warming temperatures are picking things up—the water was warm when I put my hand in it earlier.

It’s kind of nasty, really, but it’s also satisfying to see the process coming along so well now.

Well, there go my plans to go for a hike at Loch Raven this afternoon.

Because it looks like someone may have tried to break into my apartment.

The door frame is busted. The metal plates for the door closure and the lock were both pushed way the fuck out of alignment. The door does not close fully and cannot be locked.

Thing is, it’s been like this for a couple days now. The door doesn’t close fully, but there’s always been someone in the apartment, so we just…didn’t really think much of it.

Except today, when my mom came over to take me to lunch with my grandfather, I was the only one in the apartment. She was the one who pointed out the damage that neither I nor my roommates had noticed. By removing one of the plates, we were able to get the door closed, but it would not lock. She dropped me off at the offices, and the man at the desk assured me he would get someone on it immediately. I left while he was on the phone.

When I returned an hour and a half later, nothing had been done.

I had left my apartment unlocked because I was assured someone would be up to look at it, and that it would be fixed immediately. Because, y’know, having your front door lock is kind of important. But apparently not, because my door was still very much broken and very much unlockable.

Someone had been up to look at it, though. When I spoke to the man after returning, he said, “We sent someone up to look at it, and it’s gonna be a charge to your account to fix it. It looks like someone tried to force entry—like one of your roommates maybe forgot their key and tried to get in that way.”

I looked him dead in the eyes. “You know, a thief wouldn’t have a key either,” I said.

The look on his face said he had fully expected me to be content with the roommate story. He stalled for a moment, then said, “Then you’ll have to file a police report. Get them to look at it.”

“I will.”

I went back out to the car and told my mother what had been said. When I mentioned his suggestion that one of my roommates had tried to break down the door, I saw her visibly tense. She turned off the car and told me to wait there. I have no idea what words passed between the two of them, but she still looked pissed when she returned a few minutes later.

She explained to me, as we drove back up the hill, how to go about contacting the police and filing a report. “Because if you don’t,” she said, “there’s going to be a four-hundred dollar charge on everyone’s account for that door. If one of your roommates did it, they alone should pay for the repair. But if none of them did it, you let the police handle it.”

I’ve spoken to everyone who’s been in the apartment the last week, and all have denied blame. I realize that I’m just going off of what they told me, and that if the guilty party had spoken, they probably would have denied as well. But seriously. Who the hell tries to kick down a door because they forgot their key?

We’ve had key-forgetting happen before. Whoever is locked out sends a text around asking when everyone will be back, and then sits in the hall or out on the front steps to wait. We don’t try to brute force break down the fucking door. That doesn’t even make sense.
